Six years ago, a 15-year old kid, with dreadlocks, his pants hanging down, and more jewelry around his neck than Mr. T, walked through the doors of Rock Ministries. Darren Johnson wanted to use his boxing ability to become the next Muhammad Ali.... but God.... had a plan much bigger and much better for Darren’s life. Darren’s testimony of how he grew up in the inner city and what his eyes took in, is powerful. At the age of 14, he was failing out of school and getting into things that would put his life in serious jeopardy. His life was setting the stage for him to become a bad government statistic. When a kid embraces the thug mentality, by the age of 17, they will have most likely killed, raped, robbed, been sentenced to prison or been killed themselves.
The leadership at Rock made the decision to let Darren stay at it’s Transition House which temporarily houses kids with nowhere else to go. Over the next several years, Darren would begin to learn what accountability looked like. Volunteers at the ministry could now disciple Darren and begin to point him in a new direction.
For the last 2 years, Darren has been a committed intern at Rock Ministries. He has held down a part-time job, while completing the responsibilities of his internship. In September, Darren will be heading out to California to attend The School of Ministry, in Costa, Mesa. This 2-year college program is designed to bring out all the gifts which we know that Darren has, to preach and teach the Word of God.
Darren has become part of our Rock family and we will all miss him. We know, however, that God has His hand on Darren’s life, and that hopefully, God will bring him back to the mean streets of Kensington where drugs, prostitution, homicides, and homelessness is at an all time high. Although Darren had an undefeated amateur boxing record, we believe that God’s plan is to make him a champion for Christ!
Please pray that God will provide all the resources for Darren as he
